Calatheas require special attention to thrive. They require a continuously warm location as well as bright but indirect light - keep them out of direct sunlight. From spring until autumn, keep the soil moist and add humidity by spraying the leaves or standing on a tray of moist stones. Calatheas require filtered or distilled water, or rainwater - not tap water.

Calatheas prefer a potting soil or mix that drains well. Look for compost, pine bark, coco coir, worm castings, and perlite as materials. These give nutrients and aid in moisture retention (but not excessively). Plant your calathea in a 2:1 mix of soil-based compost and perlite compost. Every couple of years, repot into a little larger pot in the spring.

The best way to propagate a calathea is to divide it. When repotting the plant in the spring, carefully peel apart the rootball with your fingers - a clump at the side should naturally come away. Check to see if each clump has a root system. Repot both plants into new compost-filled pots that are somewhat larger than the new root ball. If a clump does not come away on its own, use a clean, sharp knife to cut through the rootball.
