Homiful.com -- Calathea is becoming one of the most popular house plants. It has many varieties, each of them has its own uniqueness. Calathea has a distinctive look that can bring a tropical atmosphere to your room. "How to Grow & Care For Stunning Calathea" below can be the right starting guide to owning this beauty.

Growing Calathea

Calatheas require special attention to thrive. They require a continuously warm location as well as bright but indirect light - keep them out of direct sunlight. From spring until autumn, keep the soil moist and add humidity by spraying the leaves or standing on a tray of moist stones. Calatheas require filtered or distilled water, or rainwater - not tap water.

Where to Grow

@llowjaw

Calatheas thrive in bright, indirect light, but may tolerate some shade. Avoid direct sunshine, which will scorch the foliage, and keep draughts at bay. Maintain a minimum temperature of 15°C and avoid rooms with frequent temperature changes. Calatheas love humid environments, such as in bathrooms.

Planting Calathea

@desamelor_greengallery

Calatheas prefer a potting soil or mix that drains well. Look for compost, pine bark, coco coir, worm castings, and perlite as materials. These give nutrients and aid in moisture retention (but not excessively). Plant your calathea in a 2:1 mix of soil-based compost and perlite compost. Every couple of years, repot into a little larger pot in the spring.

Propagate a Calathea

@beginnerplantmum_heysham

The best way to propagate a calathea is to divide it. When repotting the plant in the spring, carefully peel apart the rootball with your fingers - a clump at the side should naturally come away. Check to see if each clump has a root system. Repot both plants into new compost-filled pots that are somewhat larger than the new root ball. If a clump does not come away on its own, use a clean, sharp knife to cut through the rootball.

Calathea Common Problems

@ayamame_plants

SYMPTOM: Wilting, curling leaves, dry potting mix

CAUSE: Dehydration or low humidity levels

SYMPTOM: Yellowing leaves, black base, wet potting mix

CAUSE: Overwatered

SYMPTOM: Leaf spots

CAUSE: Fungal infection or mineral build up from tap water—use distilled water and water directly into surrounding potting soil

SYMPTOM: Plant pests

CAUSE: Houseplant pests like mealybugs, fungus gnats, and spider mites can happen, treat them as soon as they appear with weekly sprays of a natural pesticide like neem oil and regular wipe-downs of the plant

Calatheas are pet-friendly! They are non-toxic, so they are safe to keep around cats and dogs. However, it is preferable to keep houseplants out of the reach of little children and curious pets just in case.
